Soror Octavia McNeil Todd
Octavia McNeil Todd became a member of Pilgrim Progressive Baptist Church in 1995 and was affectionately called “Mother Todd” by many members at her church. She was born on February 9, 1922 to parents Miles and Mary McNeil in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. She was blessed with one brother, Miles McNeil Jr.
Octavia attended Douglas High School in Oklahoma City and graduated in 1940. She went on to attend Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma where she earned a BS Degree and Life Certificate to teach English and Business Courses in 1944. Upon graduation she was hired as Assistant Registrar at Langston University. She was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in 1946.
In 1954 Octavia moved to Northern California. She worked at the Presidio in San Francisco and later as a Social Worker for Alameda County in Oakland. She married Mitchell Todd on November 11, 1958 and this union was blessed with two children, Carla Denise Todd and Michael Vernon Todd. Mitchell preceded her in death in 1977.
The family moved to San Diego, California in 1972 and became members of Calvary Baptist Church. In 1973 Octavia began teaching at Abraham Lincoln High School. She performed volunteer services to the Community Hospital of San Diego for many years, was a member of the Lincoln Park Group, and her Neighborhood Watch program. In 1975 she became active with the Epsilon Xi Omega Chapter.
Octavia retired from full-time teaching in 1982 but continued to enjoy Substitute Teaching until the age of 90. She would always say “the kids help keep me young”. In 2013, at the age of 92, Octavia moved to Texas where she was cared for by her daughter, Carla. She traveled to California three to four times a year until September 2018 at the age of 96.
Octavia loved her family, Church, Sorority and friends. She departed this life on Monday, December 31, 2018. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Carla Todd Coleman, one son, Michael Vernon Todd, and other relatives and friends.
